Jap Motor & Carby Centre is a family owned, MTAQ business with more than 40 years of experience in the mechanic industry. We have a dedicated team at our workshop for all your mechanical services and repairs, proudly assisting clients from Cairns to Cape York, and everywhere in between.


We specialise in recondition carburettors and have been taking apart carbys for 20 years, cleaning and replacing gaskets, floats, seats and needles to have your engine running like new. You can be assured our work is carried out to the highest standard.


Your customer service experience is our highest priority, and we pride ourselves on looking after every client with personalised attention. Enjoy a coffee in the air conditioned lounge or take advantage of our courtesy drop off service into town—get on with your day while we fix your car! (Please ensure drop off lifts are pre-arranged with your booking, not upon arrival to workshop. Please note, pick up lifts are not available.)


If your new vehicle is under the manufacturer's warranty, we can save you money on a dealership service. We also offer a wide range of products, including reconditioned Japanese and domestic motors and cylinder heads, for petrol and diesel engines.

  • Why do I need a pre-purchase inspection before I buy a used car?

    You can't tell if a car is mechanically sound just by looking at it. Our team conducts a thorough body inspection, and we look under the hood—checking the engine, drive train, belts, hoses, and spark plugs. We also do a brake safety check and examine the suspension for any damage. We'll provide a full report on the condition of the vehicle prior to purchase.

  • Why is my check engine light on?

    Japanese engines have a good reputation on the used auto parts market. While generally more expensive, imported engines are highly reliable. Japanese cars are recycled earlier in their lives and the engines have far less wear and tear. During their lifespan, Japanese cars are subjected to rigorous quality controls, which is evident in the condition of reconditioned components.

  • I drive a new car. If I bring it to you for servicing will I lose my dealer warranty?

    Absolutely not. You are entitled by law to have your car serviced wherever you choose without affecting warranty. While we do not offer fixed price servicing on cars still under warranty, our affordable prices save you money on dealership costs—every time!
